Hysterosalpingography (HSG) is an X-ray procedure used to view the inside of the uterus and fallopian tubes. It is a diagnostic method used to view the size and shape of the uterus and whether the fallopian tubes are open or blocked. HSG is most commonly used to investigate infertility or recurrent miscarriages. HSG also helps detect uterine fibroids, endometrial polyps, adhesions, ovarian cysts, and hydrosalpinx in the uterus. HSG is done in a radiology laboratory and takes about 10 minutes. There may be cramping, vaginal bleeding, and mild pain a few hours after the procedure. Antibiotics must be used after the procedure.
